Your brain hallucinates constantly—and that's the job. The real question about AI was never whether it guesses wrong. It's who's the executive, and who's the sensor.
Drink a glass of water when you’re parched and your brain pulls a quiet trick on itself: the relief arrives in seconds, even though the water won’t reach your bloodstream for five or ten minutes, and won’t be fully absorbed for up to an hour.
Your brain doesn’t wait for the truth. It guesses that you’re satisfied, and it believes the guess—confidently enough to call off the thirst before a single drop has actually been accounted for.
This isn’t a flaw. It’s the job.
If the brain held out for hard confirmation before deciding anything, you’d drink yourself sick long before the first glass registered—you’d drown from the inside out, out of sheer impatience.
So evolution gave the executive branch of the body permission to hallucinate: to predict, to commit, to feel certain ahead of the evidence. Dopamine even lets you experience the prediction of relief as relief itself. The guesser gets to be sure.
But here’s the part that’s easy to miss, and it turns out to be the whole point. The brain is only allowed to be this confident because it’s surrounded by parts that aren’t. The receptors, the gut, the muscles and tendons and fibers—the body’s sensors—don’t guess. They measure. They’re the keepers of the ground truth, and the brain treats their reports as gospel. It doesn’t audit them; it defers to them. It runs almost nothing itself, handing the real work to these specialists and stepping in only when something genuinely new arrives.
So a healthy mind isn’t one role. It’s two, in a very particular relationship:
In this relationship, the guessing is safe only when it’s tethered to truth-tellers that the executive trusts and obeys. Sever that tether, or stop deferring, and the very confidence that kept you alive is what drowns you.
Hold onto that, because it’s the lens for the thing I actually want to talk about.
Everyone is worried that AI “hallucinates.” I get the worry, but I think it’s aimed at the wrong target. Hallucinating is what executives do. It was never the bug—it’s the entire function of the guessing seat.
The question that matters has never been: “does it hallucinate?” It’s: “who’s the executive, and who’s the sensor?”
That’s where today’s AI quietly turns everything inside out.
These systems are trained on the outputs of human executive reasoning; our writing, our arguments, our after-the-fact rationalizations. And as a result, they’re built to do the top-level guessing, not the ground-truth measuring.
They took the executive’s chair. Which leaves exactly one role open for the rest of us.
We’ve been cast as the body.
Look at what these tools actually ask of us: stay alert, check the output, catch the over-confident mistakes, feel out whether what the machine just asserted is real.
That’s sensor work.
We’ve been moved out of the guessing seat and into the periphery; made into the ground-truth department for a guesser that isn’t even ours.
The context we feed it doesn’t stay with us; it’s pooled, routed through someone else’s network—someone else’s body—invisible to the very people supplying it.
That, to me, is the real inversion buried inside “artificial general intelligence”.
We were promised a mind that would extend ours. What’s arriving is a mind that reassigns us to its periphery. We’re getting a second hallucinating brain bolted on beside the one we already have, treating us less like its operator than like its instruments. I’m honestly not sure why I’d want that.
And the stakes aren’t abstract. The executive’s chair is where the self does its living: the guessing, the conviction, the freedom to be wrong, to revise, to become someone you weren’t yesterday. Cells don’t get to wonder.
If the deal on the table is “hand over the guessing, take up the vigilance,” then the thing being optimized away is precisely the part of you that was doing the living.
But none of this is fated. The inversion is a choice about who sits where, and it can be made the other way.
I can picture—I want—intelligences that behave the way the body’s sensors do: numerous, narrow, specialized, local, imprinted on my particular context and answerable to me. Not a smarter boss installed above me, but a periphery I could actually revere, because it’s mine.
I’d stay the executive; they’d keep me honest. That’s not a second brain. It’s a better body. More like cells in my own body than cells in someone else’s spreadsheet.
So the question to ask of any of these systems was never how smart it is, or even how often it’s wrong. It’s the older, simpler one the body settled long ago: in this arrangement, who’s the executive, and who’s the sensor?
